How to Measure Ring Size at Home
The paper-strip method, the two mistakes, and when to measure twice.
Updated November 2026 · Holycome Custom Jewelry
Sizing is the most common reason a ring comes back, and almost every error comes from one of two mistakes: measuring a finger that is cold, or measuring the wrong finger.
Method 1: an existing ring (most accurate)
- Take a ring that fits the intended finger well.
- Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter — edge to edge, inside.
- Match the millimeter measurement to the chart on our size guide.
Do not measure the outside diameter. A 2 mm band and a 6 mm band of the same size have very different outside diameters.
Method 2: a strip of paper
- Cut a strip about 5 mm wide and 100 mm long.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but able to pass the knuckle.
- Mark the overlap, lay it flat, measure to the millimeter.
- That is the circumference; convert using the chart.
The two mistakes
Cold fingers. Fingers are up to half a size smaller in the cold. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature, after walking around — not first thing in the morning in winter.
The knuckle. If your knuckle is significantly wider than the base of the finger, size for the knuckle and accept a slightly loose fit at the base, or choose a hinged shank. A ring that will not pass the knuckle will not be worn.
Wide bands
Bands 6 mm and wider need about half a size more, because they cover more of the finger and pass the knuckle with less room. Comfort-fit interiors offset some of this. Tell us the width when you order and we will adjust.
Surprise proposals
If you cannot measure the finger, borrow a ring they already wear on that hand — a ring finger is usually 0.5–1 size smaller than the index finger. If there is nothing to borrow, order a common size (US 6 or 7) and plan a free resize; we do the first resize free within 30 days where the design allows.
Half sizes and quarter sizes
We make half sizes as standard and quarter sizes on request. Below US 4 and above US 13, expect a small surcharge for the extra metal or the custom mandrel.
